Football Season Review

№5: Barnsley

Barnsley had a remarkable campaign. After performing a great escape from relegation last season, a brilliant run of results saw them achieve a play-off place. However, they were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Swansea. The season didn’t start well for the Reds with three losses in their opening four games. Then boss Gerhard Struber, who had led their successful survival bid, left in early October to manage in the MLS. Struber’s departure however, proved to be a blessing in disguise as it led to the appointment of Valerien Ismael. He installed a brand of high energy, direct football. Results improved to move Barnsley clear of the relegation zone before a run of 11 wins in 14 games put them on course for their top six finish. Ever-present central midfielder and captain Alex Mowatt was the team’s driving force. The January acquisitions of Daryl Dike and Carlton Morris proved crucial with the duo weighing in with 16 goals between them. The loan signing of Dike was a real coup with the exciting young USA international giving them a strong presence up front. Next season, they will find it difficult to repeat the successes of this campaign. Ismael has already been linked with other managerial vacancies and Mowatt's future at the club is in doubt with his contract expiring this summer.
