Football Season Review

№15: Blackburn Rovers

It's fair to say the 2020/21 season was a disappointment for Blackburn. A season which offered hope ended in poor fashion, as Rovers went from play-off contenders in the first half of the season, to relegation strugglers in the second half. Tony Mowbray set up an expansive and creative 4-3-3, which allowed the likes of Armstrong, Brereton, Gallagher and summer loan signing Elliott to thrive. It was clear to see that by February, the gruelling schedule and 100% intensity appeared to catch up, and there were signs of burnout amongst the squad which showed in their poor performances. Armstrong showed his quality throughout the season, and his final tally of 28 goals was 2nd highest in the league behind Ivan Toney's 31, an astonishing season for the talisman. The loan signing of Elliott was a masterstroke from Mowbray, as the 17 year-old thrived in the attacking and free-flowing set-up. It remains to be seen if Elliott will return to Blackburn next season. The biggest issue Rovers faced this season was their defence. Blackburn leaked goals (conceding 54) and it was the main reason they weren't able to keep their place in the top half. A key area for Mowbray to work on in pre-season. Overall, there are positive signs for Blackburn and if they can keep hold of the likes of Armstrong and Brereton, the building blocks are there for a brighter season in 2021/22.
