Football Season Review

№13: Preston North End

The 2020/21 season was certainly one to forget for Preston. In a season which offered much hope after their 9th place finish in 2019/20, Alex Neil's side failed to put together any consistency and failed to make that final push into the play-offs. In particular, home form was a big disappointment, winning just 7 of their 23 games there which was a big reason why Preston were languishing in 16th place when Alex Neil was sacked in March. Frankie McAvoy took over and his appointment was met with scepticism, but the Scotsman did a stellar job and guided the Lilywhites to 13th place come the end of the season, which will be seen as a positive heading into next season. One of their key strengths was their away form. The Lilywhites picked up an impressive 35 points on the road, rather an anomaly for a side lingering towards the lower end of the table. Preston finished the season with the 7th best away record in the Championship. A huge positive for Preston were the performances of Ryan Ledson and captain Alan Browne for the second year running. Both players provide a beacon of hope for North End fans and the club would be wise to build around these two players in the years to come. After their positive end to the season, the outlook certainly looks brighter for Preston heading into the 2021/22 season.
