Football Season Review

№21: Derby County

Derby stayed up but only by the skin of their teeth. They finished 21st after securing a point on the final day after six defeats in their previous six games. At the time of writing there is still a threat of a points deduction next season and clearly things are not right off the pitch as takeover talks stall again. Phillip Cocu was sacked early on in the season and Wayne Rooney appointed manager, opting to call time on his playing career. Rooney's presence on the field was missed and he did not particularly impress as manager despite a reasonable enough start, constantly changing his tactics with team selection difficult to predict from one week to the next. Home form was poor with only six wins this season. They were poor in front of goal too with only 36 scored all season. Derby need a full revamp starting with off-field issues because despite surviving on the pitch there are still murky goings on and a takeover has still not been completed. There were no real stand-out performers, Martyn Waghorn and Tom Lawrence only really impressing in patches and youngsters not showing the promise of last term. Colin Kazim-Richards probably did better than most with eight goals.
