Football Season Review

№4: Swansea City

Swansea made the play-offs for the second consecutive season and that will be seen as a positive, however they lost 2-0 to Brentford in the final and remain in the Championship. Steve Cooper has done another stellar job and opted for a back three throughout the season, which saw Swansea look as solid as ever with Naughton, Bennett and Guehi often the pillars in defence. The change in formation at the start of the season was a masterstroke from Cooper. Credit to the defence as they carried Swansea at times during the season, conceding just 39 goals which ended as the third stingiest defence in the league. Andre Ayew won Swansea's player of the season and it's clear to see why. The Ghanaian has provided much needed quality throughout the season and his 16 goals have been absolutely vital to securing a play-off spot. Despite Ayew's heroics and Lowe's contribution, Swansea have had trouble scoring goals in spells this season. Their 56 goals is the lowest in the top 9 and perhaps there's an element of relying too heavily on the defence, which is already carrying an enormous load. Steve Cooper knows the club have a fight on their hands to keep hold of their star players with Swansea remaining in the Championship. The key focus in the pre-season will be to convince the likes of Hourihane and Guehi to return from their respective clubs, but this again comes down to whether the Swans can secure promotion.

Player of the Season: Andre Ayew
