Football Season Review

№24: Sheffield Wednesday

A turbulent season for Sheffield Wednesday ended in relegation. They could have stayed up on the final day if they had defeated Derby, but they drew 3-3. Wednesday were always on the back foot after starting the season with a 12-point deduction. However, this was subsequently reduced to six points, which gave them a realistic chance of survival. They managed to move out of the relegation zone during January and February but were soon back in the bottom three. A managerial merry-go-round during the campaign did not help their cause, with three permanent bosses and one caretaker manager being appointed. Tony Pulis’ reign was a disaster with one win from his 10 games in charge. Darren Moore ended the season in charge but his period at the helm was stop-start as he was forced to spend an extended period away from the club having contracted Covid-19 then pneumonia. Barry Bannan and Josh Windass were their standout performers. Bannan ran games from central midfield with his excellent range of passing. Windass was their main attacking threat and weighed in with nine goals and six assists. It promises to be a summer of upheaval, with seven out of the 14 players that featured in the last game out of contract. One area of stability is that Darren Moore will stay as manager for next season.
