Football Season Review

№19: Birmingham City

A baffling season for Birmingham City. Gary Rowett was doing a good job with his side on the verge of the play-offs when he was inexplicably dumped just before the halfway point in the season. Under replacement Gianfranco Zola, Birmingham really failed to perform winning just twice in the next five months. Eventually that resulted in Zola leaving the club with firefighter Harry Redknapp coming in for the last three games on a rescue mission. The Blues did just enough to survive but they should never have been in a relegation battle anyway. Redknapp has now signed on for next season and he promises to bring in several players as he is someone who has joined the transfer market over the years and been effective at it. Birmingham struggled in all departments in the second half of last season so you get the impression new signings are needed all over the pitch. Attack may be the obvious area though with Clayton Donaldson blighted by injuries and Lucas Jutkiwicz unconvincing. David Davis was player of the year largely due to his consistent displays in the middle of the park in a campaign where there was little consistency overall.
