Football Season Review

№20: Burton Albion

Burton may have won promotion last season but this campaign must go down as the best in their history. The Brewers were expected to struggle but punched well above their weight in an impressive campaign where they proved they can match it amongst the big boys. Despite being poor on the road where they waited a number of months for their first Championship away win, Burton were different at the Pirelli Stadium, a venue where few sides enjoyed playing with its close-knit environment. Jackson Irvine proved to be the most effective of the signings in the summer for Burton but really the key figure was Nigel Clough who brilliantly managed the club to safety against all the odds. It will be tough for Clough to replicate this achievement - and indeed he will attract interest from other clubs having turned down Nottingham Forest midway through the season - but he will certainly relish the challenge. Burton may well need reinforcements in attack, an area that did not always flow, lacking a regular goalscorer. Defensively Burton were very solid as that area of their game mirrored the incredible character they showed this season.
