Football Season Review

№23: Wigan Athletic

Wigan were relegated from the Championship in their first season back at this level after an abysmal campaign. They in the end paid the price for dismissing Gary Caldwell. The Latics were struggling under the man that had taken them up but his replacement Warren Joyce proved to be out of his depth and his failure all but ended Wigan's hopes of surviving. Joyce was sacked and Graham Barrow took interim charge in time to see the club relegated back to League One. Wigan really lacked a goalscorer which was surprising given Will Grigg never got going while summer signing Omar Bogle also could not find the net regularly despite a promising start. Wigan were very disappointing on home soil and that ultimately cost them. Wigan know they need to get the next managerial appointment right but this whole season could have been avoided if they had kept faith in Caldwell. They also had a number of injuries throughout the campaign which really did not help matters. Nick Powell was especially missed and his goals late on in the season once he had returned from injury were in the end too little too late.
