Football Season Review

№22: Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn paid the price for a chronic shortage of investment from their much-maligned owners Venky's as they were relegation to England's tier in a desperate campaign. Rovers surprisingly appointed Owen Coyle as new boss last summer and he did little to prove he was the right man for the job during a campaign that was bleak right from the very start. Blackburn were in the bottom few places for the whole season and things never seriously looked like changing even when Coyle was eventually dismissed and replaced by Tony Mowbray. Mowbray did get them play better football but the damage had already been done and they were relegated on the final day. Mowbray did at least provide some optimism for next season and it was not the most dreadful relegation ever. However it is pretty clear than further investment is necessary in the club. Injuries were persistent throughout the campaign and that failed to help matters. Defender Derrick Williams was named player of the season but might have been challenged by Charlie Mulgrew and Danny Graham if the pair had been able to stay fit during the season.
