Football Season Review

№18: Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic secured their Championship status for the 2014/15 campaign under the management of boss, Jose Riga. The former AC Milan youth coach took charge of the club in the New Year after the departure of former boss, Chris Powell. Powell was ousted following a Christmas takeover by Belgian businessman, Roland Duchatelet, who also owns successful Belgian outfit, Standard Liege. Despite a raft of new faces from clubs owned by Duchatelet, Riga used the core of the existing playing squad to keep the Addicks clear of the drop zone in the final third of the campaign. Chris Powell was somewhat disappointed to be fired, with Charlton still in with a chance of avoiding the drop before his departure. Riga's successful managership towards the end of the season meant supporters soon forgot the good work Powell had accomplished however. Charlton were one of the division's lowest scorers with just 41 goals to their name. Improving their output in the final third will be a priority for next term. Riga is unlikely to carry on as first team coach in 2014/15 with a new boss set to be named - potentially from Belgian football - over the summer. There is a good core of young players at The Valley, with the likes of Callum Harriot, Diego Poyet and Jordan Cousins making good progress this term.
