Football Season Review

№3: Brentford

Brentford will be kicking themselves over how they did not win promotion to the Premier League for the first time. Statistics will prove they were the best side in the Championship in terms of overall goals scored and conceded, but they did not hold their nerve at crucial moments to succeed. Having resumed the season in 4th they went on a magnificent seven-game winning streak (eight in total) to take them within touching distance of automatic promotion. That would have been achieved if they had won just one of their two remaining games where they unexpectedly lost to both Stoke and Barnsley. They then lost 2-1 to West London rivals Fulham in the play-off final. Their famed 'BMW' front three of Said Benrahma, Bryan Mbeumo and Ollie Watkins were key components of their season but all three could now leave the club. It is certainly a summer of uncertainty in that regard, especially as they move in to their new stadium after over 100 years at Griffin Park. Thomas Frank enhanced his reputation during this campaign, but may well have a rebuilding job on his hands if key players leave.
