Football Season Review

№22: Charlton Athletic

Charlton endured a horrible second half of the campaign which, along with a repeat mess off the pitch, led to them being relegated back to League One after just one season. Lee Bowyer did an extraordinary job despite the end outcome being relegation. Charlton have had repeat ownership issues and the very future of the club could now be in danger depending on certain matters over the summer. Even so, Charlton will be kicking themselves at their failure to stay up having been in a comfortable position at the midway stage. They survived an injury crisis early in the season but the loss of Conor Gallagher who was on loan proved to be very costly indeed. Additionally Lyle Taylor, who had scored 11 goals in 22 appearances of an injury-hit season, opted not to play after the season resumed and that was a major issue for Charlton in their pursuit of survival. Dillon Phillips was player of the season thanks to a superb display in goal for the Addicks. The 4-0 loss at Leeds on the final day sunk Charlton who started the day outside the bottom three. There is so much uncertainty for Charlton over the summer that it will be very difficult for them to plan for a new campaign.
