Football Season Review

№24: Bolton Wanderers

Bolton in the end got what they deserved. Financial problems off the pitch meant that Neil Lennon never had much chance managing the Trotters but the players never looked good enough to survive. They finished bottom of the Championship, 19 points adrift of safety, collecting only 30 points in total. After Lennon's departure, Jimmy Phillips took the reins and his policy of playing youngsters backfired somewhat as their lack of experience was exposed. In reality though their chances of survival had long gone by then. Their struggle for goals meant that veteran Emile Heskey led the line for long periods while their bleak financial situation meant midfielder Jay Spearing missed the last third of the season so Bolton did not have to pay his former club a transfer clause of £100,000. That said the financial situation of the club is improving but they must find a new boss quickly capable of mounting a promotion challenge. Bolton did not win a single away game last term.
