Football Season Review

№18: Coventry City

Coventry City were yet another side to enjoy an encouraging start to the 2010/11 campaign, only to see their hopes and dreams dashed in the second half of the campaign. The Sky Blues found themselves firmly in the top six shake-up before Christmas, but Aidy Boothroyd appeared to run out of ideas at the turn of the New Year, with many City supporters highly critical of Coventry’s direct playing style under the former Watford supreme. Boothroyd’s relationship with troubled striker Marlon King saw the Jamaican international complete a two-year switch to the Ricoh Arena which did not prove to be as big a gamble as many made out. Whether King remains or jumps ship due to Boothroyd’s departure in the latter stage of the season remains to be seen. Caretaker boss Andy Thorn eventually won the players, supporters and the board over with his positive brand of football that saw the Sky Blues finish 13 points clear of the drop zone. As this is Thorn’s first managerial appointment it is quite possible a more senior footballing individual may be called upon next term in an advisory capacity. Replacing departing keeper Keiren Westwood will be the main priority this summer for Thorn.
