Football Season Review

№3: Swansea City

Swansea City were victorious in the Championship play-off final on Bank Holiday Monday as Brendan Rodgers’ men defeated Reading 4-2 at Wembley Stadium. The Swans have been a delight to watch over the course of the season, with their style of play likened to that of Spanish giants Barcelona by many Championship experts. City were grateful to have an impressive source of goals from the flanks with Scott Sinclair bagging 19 league goals in an outstanding campaign. Swansea narrowly missed out on automatic promotion but galvanised themselves enough to finish in third position, ahead of bitter rivals Cardiff. A play-off semi final victory over Nottingham Forest set up the clash with Reading and Sinclair’s goalscoring prowess came to the fore again, scoring a hat-trick in the victory over the Royals. The foundations of their successful season were also laid with their impressive defence marshalled by skipper Garry Monk and Welsh international Ashley Williams. City’s defensive record was second only to champions Queens Park Rangers and Rodgers will be confident his side can step up to the plate in the top flight for the first time in 30 years.
