Football Season Review

№13: Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town began the season full of hope of securing a return to the promised land under former boss Roy Keane. The Irishman led Town into the top six by October but another disastrous run of games without victory saw the Blues plummet towards the bottom three at Christmas, forcing owner Marcus Evans to act. Keane was fired in the New Year and replaced by Paul Jewell. Jewell transformed Town’s fortunes with relative ease, playing some impressive football to boot. Town’s Carling Cup run will live long in the memory of Blues supporters with the Suffolk side defeating Arsenal 1-0 in the first leg of their semi final tie. Ipswich eventually went down 3-1 on aggregate at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg. The January loan signing of Jimmy Bullard was inspired by Jewell, with the 32-year-old enjoying a run of 16 games at Portman Road, scoring some important goals within that time to earn him the player of the season award. Norwich’s automatic promotion will hurt all concerned at Portman Road, but Jewell will have the funds to overhaul Keane’s squad and aim for a more competitive season in 2011/12.
