Football Season Review

№19: Derby County

Derby County appeared on course for a very successful season in Autumn as Nigel Clough’s men pushed their way into the playoff places by playing some fine fluid football. However, injuries and a dramatic loss of form saw the Rams plummet towards the foot of the Championship table. Boss, Nigel Clough eventually came under scrutiny from supporters with County looking over their shoulder in the closing stages of the season. However, vital home wins over Leeds United and Swansea City were enough to haul Derby clear of the relegation zone by seven points. Clough’s reluctance to change the Rams’ playing style appeared to be an issue towards the back end of the campaign. Nevertheless, loan signing Jamie Ward and the return to fitness of striker Steve Davies saw renewed dynamism in the final third - enough to see them clear of the drop zone. The influence of defensive midfielder Robbie Savage waned as the season progressed with the former Welsh international announcing his retirement at the end of the season. The Rams have been quick to secure the services of Frank Fielding, Jamie Ward and Theo Robinson on permanent deals following their successful loan spells at Pride Park.
