Football Season Review

№24: Scunthorpe United

Scunthorpe United are bidding farewell to life in the Championship after finishing at the foot of the table. It has been a bitterly disappointing campaign for the Iron who managed to win just five home games all season, surprising considering their successful survival bid in 2009/10 was built upon a fantastic home record at Glanford Park. The departure of last season’s leading goalscorer Gary Hooper was critical for United, particularly as they decided not to spend significant funds on replacing him for 2010/11. Without a consistent goalscorer Scunthorpe were always on a hiding to nothing and this, combined with their disastrous defensive record of 87 goals conceded, contributed to their downfall. Former boss Ian Baraclough received his marching orders in the latter stages of the season, eventually replaced by Bury boss Alan Knill. Knill has been promised funds to rejuvenate the squad in League One and he will certainly look to tighten up at the back whilst finding the next Billy Sharp or Gary Hooper from the conveyor belt.
