Football Season Review

№20: Reading

Reading survived - and in the end relatively comfortably - after it appeared as if they would be destined for the drop after a couple of poor seasons. Paul Clement was sacked just before Christmas after a horrible first half of the season. The Royals were well off the pace and especially poor on home soil. In his place in came Jose Gomes, an unknown Portuguese manager, but fans know about him now. Reading were not exactly spectacular under their new boss but so much better than before, working hard and at least having some organised game plan. Gomes made at least two impressive loan signings with Emi Martinez impressing in goal and Nelson Oliveira starring up-front. Reading will struggle to make those two permanent due to the financial situation at the club making it an uncertain summer for them. Andy Rinomhota was a surprise choice as official Reading player of the year after coming through the ranks. New captain Liam Moore was also impressive at the back especially as he was given little help at times by defensive colleagues. Yakou Meite's surge of late season form was also particularly helpful.
