Football Season Review

№18: Wigan Athletic

Wigan just did enough to survive after looking in big trouble at one stage of the season. Having won promotion last term, the Latics confidently started the campaign back in the Championship with a number of impressive early season performances. However they soon forgot how to win - and how to score - as they fell way down the division and too close to the drop for comfort. Paul Cook enhanced his reputation as a manager by getting the best out of his team when it mattered in the last few games of the season and in the end the battle was won before the final day of the campaign. Wigan survived thanks to hard graft and managerial nous and did not have a great deal of quality about their team. The player of the season was Reece James who starred on loan from Chelsea but is unlikely to return. Nick Powell's constant injury troubles also proved to be a problem again. Wigan impressed at home but won just twice on the road all season, a record that needs improving if they are to perform better next term.
